How Brands Measure Communication Effectiveness: The Reach × Resonance Formula
More views. More clicks. Still no results. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. The problem is not your budget or your posting frequency. It is that reach alone was never the full equation.
The Formula Smart Brands Use
Reach × Resonance = Communication Effectiveness
Most brands obsess over reach. Few truly invest in resonance. And that gap is where campaigns go to die.
What Is Reach?
Reach tells you how far your content travelled. It measures impressions, unique audience exposure, and frequency. It answers the question: how many people saw this?
But size is not impact. High reach with low resonance is wasted spend. You can put your message in front of a million people and if it does not connect, you have reached no one that matters.
What Is Resonance?
Resonance is where brands are won or lost. It lives in emotion, memory, and behaviour change. It is harder to measure, and far more valuable. You measure it through engagement rate, sentiment, brand recall, and ultimately conversion.
• Engagement rate : did they stop and interact?
• Sentiment : did it feel right to them?
• Brand recall : do they remember you 48 hours later?
• Conversion : did it move them to act?
You Need Both. One Without the Other Underdelivers.
A campaign with reach but no resonance is loud and forgettable. A campaign with resonance but no reach is a whisper it moves people, but not enough of them. The goal is maximum reach, with content that resonates deeply with the audience it touches.
